Even the best boilers encounter issues. Here are the 5 most common problems and how to address them quickly to minimize downtime.
1. Ignition Failure (Boiler Won't Start)
Symptoms: Fan runs, spark sounds, but no flame.
Fix:
-
Check gas pressure gauge.
-
Clean the ignition electrode (carbon buildup).
-
Wipe the UV flame scanner; a dirty lens can't see the fire.
2. Low Water Level Alarm
Symptoms: Alarm rings, burner cuts off.
Fix:
-
Check if the feedwater pump is running. If not, check its overload relay.
-
If pump runs but no water enters, check for a closed valve or clogged strainer.
-
Safety Warning: NEVER manually bypass this alarm.
3. Water Hammer (Banging Noises)
Symptoms: Loud metallic banging in pipes on startup.
Fix:
-
Cause: Condensed water trapped in steam usage.
-
Check your steam traps. Ensure condensate return lines are pitched downwards.
4. Black Smoke
Symptoms: Dark smoke from the stack.
Fix:
-
Incomplete combustion. Not enough air or too much fuel.
-
Clean the burner nozzle. Increase air damper setting slightly.
5. Frequent Cycling (On/Off)
Symptoms: Burner starts and stops every few minutes.
Fix:
-
Boiler is oversized for the load.
-
Increase the pressure differential (cut-in/cut-out) settings to give it a wider operating band.
