Spring is here. For many heating boilers, this means shut-down. But for process boilers that were idle during a slow season, it is time to wake up.
The 'Slow Start' Protocol
WARNING: Never fire a cold boiler to 100% immediately. Thermal shock damages steel.
Step-by-Step Restart
-
Inspect Waterside: Open the manhole. Is there rust? Sludge? If yes, flush it out.
-
Check Pumps: Spin the pump shaft by hand. It should turn freely. If stuck, the bearings may need grease or replacement.
-
Fill Slowly: Fill with treated water (softened + deoxygenated).
-
Low Fire: Fire the burner on "Low" setting for 15 minutes, then off for 15 minutes. Repeat this cycle until the water reaches 60°C.
-
Tighten Bolts: As pressure builds, thermal expansion occurs. Re-tighten manhole and handhole bolts to prevent leaks.
-
Safety Test: Before going full load, manually trip the Low Water Cutoff to ensure safety systems work.
