Hot Water Boiler Selection: Heat Load, Temperatures and System Pressure

Specify the heating duty, supply and return temperatures, hydraulic arrangement and fuel supply for a commercial or industrial hot water boiler.

A hot water boiler is part of a heating circuit. Selecting it only by building area or by the largest model in a catalogue leaves important questions unanswered. A useful enquiry connects the heat demand to the required water temperatures, system pressure and installation layout.

Separate space heating, process heating and domestic hot water

State what the water will heat and whether it is a closed heating circuit or a system supplying domestic hot water through a heat exchanger or storage arrangement. List simultaneous duties and their schedules. Do not assume that heating-circuit water is suitable for direct domestic use; identify the intended separation and applicable materials requirements in the design.

For a building, provide the calculated design heat load, location and design conditions. For a process, provide the equipment heat demand and production schedule. For a replacement, include operating records and the reason for replacement. An existing nameplate rating is evidence about the old installation, not proof of the new heat requirement.

State output and temperatures together

Write the required useful heat output in kW or MW, alongside the design supply and return temperatures. The circulating flow, water properties and temperature difference determine the heat carried by the circuit. Ask the system designer to check these together rather than selecting a pump from boiler output alone.

Distinguish the cold filling condition, operating pressure and equipment design limit. Building height, expansion arrangements and hydraulic separation are part of the overall system design. Ask which water-side pressure drops and flow limits apply to the quoted boiler. Changing the heat source does not automatically make existing pumps and controls suitable.

Match the package to the fuel and load pattern

Provide gas supply conditions or the specified liquid fuel, and the electrical supply for pumps and controls. If considering electric heating, establish available electrical capacity before requesting a final equipment selection. Ask how the proposed system operates in mild weather or at reduced production, when demand is below the design peak.

For a heat-recovery or condensing proposal, request performance at your expected return-water temperature and operating load. Make the proposed materials, condensate handling and flue arrangement part of the quotation. A performance figure based on different water temperatures is not a direct comparison.

Items to include in the enquiry

  • Application, location and calculated peak heat demand.
  • Normal and minimum operating loads and annual operating hours.
  • Supply / return temperatures, fluid specification and pressure requirements.
  • Existing hydraulic diagram, pumps, heat exchangers and storage where applicable.
  • Fuel, electricity, water quality, plant-room dimensions and service access.
  • Redundancy requirements, controls interface, installation scope and destination documentation.

Browse the hot water boiler range, including the WNS hot water series. Send your load calculation and hydraulic diagram for selection. State any unknowns explicitly so they can be resolved before ordering.
